There is no single perfect week. There is a perfect week for you, and it changes depending on whether you care most about warm water, low crowds, low prices, or the odds of a picture-perfect sky. So instead of giving you one date, we are going to walk you through the whole year the way a local would, month by month, and let you pick your own. What is the weather actually like in winter? ⛄ January through March is our quiet season, and we love it more than we probably should admit. Daytime highs sit comfortably enough for long walks, but the Gulf itself is cold, hovering somewhere from the upper 50s to the upper 60s. This is not swimming weather for most people. It is, however, wonderful for everything else. The beach is nearly empty, the light is soft and gold in the late afternoon, and you can actually hear the waves instead of a crowd. If you come to read, to walk, to watch dolphins, or just to slow all the way down, winter is a genuinely underrated time to be here. When does it start to warm up? 🌼 April is the turn. The air feels like spring, the water climbs into the upper 60s and low 70s, and the beach starts to wake up. Some brave souls swim. Most people wade, dig their toes in, and save the real swimming for a bit later. April and May are, in our opinion, one of the sweet spots of the entire year. You get warm, pleasant days without the deep summer heat, the crowds are still light, and prices are gentler than peak season. Is summer worth the heat and the crowds? 🌞 Here is where we get honest. Summer is our busiest, hottest, most popular stretch, and there is a reason for that. By June the Gulf reaches the low 80s, and swimming becomes the whole point of the day. July and August are the peak, with water temperatures topping out around 86 or 87 degrees. It genuinely feels like a warm bath. The trade-off is that everybody knows this. Summer brings the biggest crowds and the highest rates, and the afternoon heat is real, so we tell guests to plan beach mornings, take a midday break, and come back for the golden hour. One thing worth knowing about summer: 🐢 this is sea turtle nesting season, which runs May 1 through October 31. If you are staying in a beachfront home, use only red or amber lights facing the water at night, keep the beach dark, and pack up your chairs and gear when you leave. Leave no trace is not just a slogan here. It is how the nests survive. When is the water still warm but the crowds thin out? 🍂 September and October might be the best kept secret on this stretch of coast. The water is still warm, sitting in the upper 70s to low 80s, so you can absolutely still swim. But the summer crowds have gone home, kids are back in school, and rates come down. If you want the summer feeling without the summer chaos, this is your window. We book a lot of repeat guests in the fall for exactly this reason. One local heads-up: from about September through November, you may run into black flies 🪰 near the dunes, especially on breezy days. They are harmless but annoying. A little DEET solves it. Bring some and you will not think about it again. So, what is the single best time to visit? If you are making us choose, we point most people toward late April into May, or September into October. Those shoulder windows give you warm-enough water, comfortable air, thinner crowds, and better prices all at once. If your priority is bathwater-warm Gulf swimming and you do not mind company, come in June, July, or August. And if you want the beach almost to yourself and you are here for the quiet more than the swimming, winter will surprise you. The swim window, roughly, runs from June through early October. Everything before and after is beautiful in its own way, just cooler in the water. 🏊 What about hurricane season? We get asked this a lot, so let us be straightforward. Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June through November, with the highest activity usually in late summer and early fall. Most trips during this window are completely uneventful, and the vast majority of days are sunny. We simply recommend that fall travelers keep an eye on the forecast in the days before arrival and consider travel insurance for peace of mind. It is not a reason to avoid the coast. If you can travel in the shoulder seasons, you get the best of almost everything.
